Book Review: In Five Years

Thank you to Libro.fm and Simon and Schuster Audio for my copy in exchange for an honest review!

Everything is going according to plan in Dannie Cohan’s life – career and relationship wise. Just when it all seems perfect – a perfect job and fiancée, she’s transported to the future. In that dream, she is engaged to a stranger; living in a different apartment, in an area she never thought she would live in. Fast forward to the future, she meets the stranger in her dream. She does then all in her power to prevent the dream to happen.

This is also a story of her beautiful friendship with Bella. And of course the question, where do you see yourself in five years?

I enjoyed listening to the audio. The narrator, Megan Hilty, has a certain voice quality that I liked. She’s able to alter her voice that helps the listener distinguish the character speaking.

In Five Years, written by Rebecca Serle, is a fast paced and compelling story. It’s a book you’d want to listen to and listen to some more. If I had no work to do, I would have finished it in one sitting. I enjoyed listening to Dannie’s perspective. She’s my kind of person in some ways. I loved how she speaks of her mind the way things as they were. However, I found myself asking for more. I wanted to see her grow in the book. I wanted to see how her relationships progress.

One of the things I really liked in this book was her relationship with Bella. It was a powerful and moving friendship. Theirs showed that you don’t have to be the same to be friends. Friends complement each other. They lend strength to one another. My heart ached for these two, that I shed a few tears.

Originality is there, I guess this varies from one reader to another. I haven’t read much books with such premise. I love some of the twists too.

Still it fell flat to me towards the ending. This one’s plot was furthered by the choices of Dannie. There wasn’t much for internal transformation for the main characters. I thought it could have ended better if Dannie chose differently.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. I would highly recommend it if you want a fast paced read.
